47 Years Ago: Janis Joplin Records Her Final Song, And Seals Her Legacy In Just One Take | Society Of Rock.

Sunset Sound Recorders | October 1, 1970

The first three days of October, 1970 were busy ones for Janis Joplin. She spent October 1st revising her will with her legal team but found time to head into Sunset Sound Recorders to finish up work on her upcoming album Pearl, nearly finished but still needing a few final touches and on a whim, began to lay down an a cappella studio performance of her newly written “Mercedes Benz.” Stripped bare of any backing instrumentation or studio effects, “Mercedes Benz” is as rough as any Janis Joplin track gets, every bit as beautifully unfinished as the woman driving it and yet still as impactful as any of its more polished, album-ready companions.

Totally lacking in falseness of any kind, what would come to be Janis’ final studio performance sealed the 27-year-old singer’s legacy, giving fans a final glimpse at one of rock’s best and brightest at her most fearless and vulnerable in a place she felt safe enough to let down her guard; while “Mercedes Benz” would be remixed over 30 years later and given a beat and background melody, there’s something deeply inauthentic about the remix that betrays the honesty and naked feeling of Janis’ final studio performance. We know she’d have gone back and finished it if the universe had allowed her just a little more time, but knowing that this was the last time we’d ever hear that larger than life voice and sweet laugh, we wouldn’t trade this version of “Mercedes Benz” for anything.

Kim Kardashian and the price of Narcissism.

How much do I hate Kim Kardashian? Let me count the ways. I hate her to the width of her preposterous posterior and the snow-globe swelling of her bumptious boobs. How many bees were sacrificed to sting those swollen lips or whales boned to sculpt those hour-glass hips?

For turning conspicuous consumption into an art form, for making Narcissus look only mildly self-obsessed, for saying female empowerment is photographing your own backside (LOL!), for fame without talent, and shopping without end, for being the mirror in which a billion young girls look and find themselves plain, for all these do I loathe thee, Kim. NZ Herald

Eminem will have his day in court with the NZ National Party next May.

American rapper Eminem’s court battle with the National Party will take place next year. The High Court at Wellington has confirmed the trial, which will consider the copyright of music used in the party’s 2014 election campaign ads, will start on May 1. The trial is expected to last three weeks.

Eight Mile Style LLC and Martin Affiliated LLC, Detroit-based publishers of Eminem’s copyrights, have accused National of using backing music to the rapper’s song Lose Yourself without permission.
The National Party has flatly rejected the allegation it used the track from the Eight Mile film.
