Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki claimed this week that earthquakes are caused by sinners. Quoting the Old Testament Book Leviticus he said “the earth convulses under the weight of certain human sin” and singled out homosexuals for causing the Christchurch earthquakes. Tamaki subsequently went on radio to explain he wasn’t just talking about gays but anybody indulging in “illicit sexual behaviour”.
The trouble is, The Book Of Leviticus contains a number of supposedly God given rules that even Brian Tamaki doesn’t observe …and which, by his own logic, may well have played a part in causing the recent earthquakes.
Take Leviticus 19:27 for example, which prohibits men from having haircuts and shaving. Could it be that Tamaki’s grooming behaviour triggered the damage to State Highway One? Or maybe it was his flaunting of the rule about not wearing garments made of two kinds of thread (Leviticus 19:18) that caused “the earth to speak” earlier this week.
And Trump? Well….where do we start?
How about his tweet of June 3rd this year. “Climate change is a myth created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive”.
China’s vice foreign minister, Liu Zhenmin, slam dunked that particular conspiracy theory by pointing out that in fact it was the billionaire’s Republican predecessors who launched the climate negotiations almost three decades ago.
Speaking at the UN climate talks in Marrakech on Wednesday, Zhenmin said. “If you look at the history of climate change negotiations, actually it was initiated by the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] with the support of the Republicans during the Reagan and senior Bush administration during the late 1980s”
And what do Trump and Tamaki do when their outrageous claims are reported? Blame the media for causing the problem!
What astounds me is not that both men can make such bizarre claims, but that they can gather large numbers of people around them prepared to believe such arrant nonsense.
